How Optical Bonding Works?

Optical Bonding A special optical grade silicone-based adhesive attaches a piece of protective glass to an LCD display. In addition, the optically bonded adhesive can also bond the touchscreen to the LCD display if the application requires touch interaction.

This approach eliminates any air gaps that typically occur with other bonding methods between the cover glass, touchscreen, and underlying LCD display. Air gaps between these layers cause glare and provide a reflective surface for external light passing through the assembly. When light bounces off these surfaces, it obscures the image on the LCD. Eliminating as much reflected light as possible basically improves the resolution of the image to the reader or viewer, enhancing the usability of the system and protecting it at the same time. In addition to particularly sunny conditions, optical bonding can also improve visibility in other conditions. For example, if optical bonding does not eliminate air gaps, high humidity can cause fogging between layers.

Optical bonding has many advantages:

  • Durability - Resists scratches, liquids, dust, insects and accidental shocks

  • High temperature resistance – immune to all but the most extreme temperatures

  • Improved readability - compatible with anti-reflection or polarizing coatings

  • Reduced parallax – removes the illusion of pixel shift caused by air gaps between layers

  • Shatterproof – Sturdy glass shield protects the LCD display
