What is Projected Capacitive Touch Technology?

Projected capacitive touchscreens are typically fabricated from a glass layer on the front, followed by a matrix of conductive elements. These elements are made of conductive materials, such as indium tin oxide (ITO), silver, copper, or carbon, and are arranged in layers X and Y (with an insulating layer in between).

The conductive matrix is connected to an appropriately designed touch controller, which injects charge into the matrix and then monitors changes in the various elements of the matrix. When a finger (or stylus) approaches the front of the touchscreen, the capacitive field created within the matrix behind the front glass changes slightly.

PCAP touch screen

The touch controller firmware should be sophisticated and sensitive enough to detect these changes, identify the areas or elements in the matrix that have changed the most, and "triangulate" the touch location within the X and Y layers. The controller then transmits this data to the host computer in the form of XY coordinates, much like how a mouse or mouse pad (also projected capacitive touch sensing) moves the cursor around the display.
